Our Programs
City Gardening Contest
Each year Greater Newark Conservancy’s Community Greening Program organizes and implements an annual City
Gardens Contest to recognize outstanding horticultural efforts by Newark residents. The contest serves as
an incentive for community residents to create gardens and street plantings to improve their neighborhoods.
Individuals, Block Greening Clubs, and other community groups enter the contest to compete for prizes in thirteen
separate categories. Volunteer judges tour the gardens twice during the summer, evaluating them and determining the
winners in the various categories. Each entrant in the contest receives an invitation to our Annual Awards Ceremony
which is held in October. In 2005, 172 entrants participated in the contest and well over 250 people attended the
Awards Ceremony. Donated prizes valued at $6,000 were awarded.
This year planning for the 16th annual City Gardens Contest is well advanced and the Conservancy looks forward to honoring
the stewards of Newark’s many remarkable gardens. Click on the entry form below to enter the 2006 City Gardens Contest
