Flower Barrel Program

Flowers add warmth, color and life to our urban environment. A block lined with blooming flower barrels makes a neighborhood blossom with beauty and pride. Greater Newark Conservancy's Flower Barrel Program makes available wooden and plastic flower barrels, along with planting materials and horticultural assistance for organized community and neighborhood groups.

The Flower Barrel program began in 1988 with the delivery of several hundred flower barrels to 10 blocks in Newark's Weequahic section. To date, residents on over 100 Newark blocks have participated in the Conservancy's Flower Barrel Program. Over 2000 flower barrels have been planted in Newark's five wards. This project is the Conservancy's longest running effort and reaches more than 1000 families.

Are you interested in Flower Barrels for Your Block?

Call the Conservancy at (973) 642-4646 to set up a meeting with the Conservancy's Community Greening Coordinator.
  • Organize a meeting in your neighborhood to advertise your intention to initiate flower barrel plantings. The meeting could be an official block association meeting or an informal meeting between a few active neighbors.
  • Pick a planting day. The best days to plant are on Saturdays in conjunction with a block party or cleanup.
  • Go door to door to pass out flyers to all residents advertising the planting day. The Conservancy can help you create a personalized flyer.
  • The Conservancy will deliver the flower barrels, soil, tools for the day, and starter flowers to your block at a minimal cost and will conduct a barrel planting demonstration.
  • Community residents are expected to provide the labor to fill all flower barrels with soil and to plant all the flowers.
  • The free flower barrel delivery and planting program is only available for residents of Newark. For programs outside of Newark, please contact the Conservancy.
