The Joan D. Murray Volunteerism Award
This award, created in memory of Joan D. Murray, is presented to organizations and individuals who embody her passionate spirit and extraordinary commitment to volunteerism.
Audible continuously strives to create a positive impact on the cities it calls home. Rooted in the belief that companies can—and should—have missions that transcend financial success, Audible is committed to creating innovative solutions to systemic issues. By listening to and working with community stakeholders, they bring their shared vision to life. Relocating their headquarters to Newark in 2007 not only accelerated the renaissance of this great American city but also created opportunities for its residents. This mission is enshrined in their People Principles and guides their day-to-day operations.
In 2020, with an aim to expand community initiatives focused on advancing equity, racial justice, and economic empowerment, Audible launched the Global Center for Urban Development. Based in Newark, the center includes Audible locations in cities worldwide and features programs and policy initiatives that can be implemented globally.
Locally, Audible's impact in Newark has been phenomenal. At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Audible formed Newark Working Kitchens, an initiative that has provided 1.5 million meals, delivered by 37 local restaurants, to Newark residents in need. This initiative not only addressed food insecurity during the global pandemic but also helped sustain the local restaurant economy. In addition, the company encourages its employees to dedicate time during their workday to local community organizations. The Greater Newark Conservancy has had the pleasure of collaborating with numerous Audible employees and departments at our farm and Outdoor Learning Center. We greatly appreciate all that Audible employees contribute to the city of Newark!
