Job Descriptions
Greater Newark Conservancy is seeking reliable, self-guided, and motivated work-study eligible students to support programming in various areas related to community engagement, food access, food production, food marketing, and food distribution throughout Newark, NJ. Work for these positions will take place mostly in person; however, some virtual work may be required. All students will be required to follow Greater Newark Conservancy’s procedures related to mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Applicants should be prepared to maintain a consistent work schedule and be comfortable working in various outdoor conditions.
Applicants should apply for a position in one of the following departments:
Farm Stand: Greater Newark Conservancy operates a mobile farm stand that sells fresh, Newark-grown produce and other products to residents throughout Newark. Individuals in this position will be expected to work with the Farm Stand Coordinator to plan and execute every aspect of Farm Stand business operations, from food harvesting and processing to food selling and donation. Applicants for this position should be interested in improving food access and engaging community members in healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
Responsibilities include:
● Completing ServSafe food handlers certification course
● Selling produce
● Harvesting and packing produce
● Maintaining positive, friendly interactions with customers
● Working outdoors in rain, shine, or cooler temperatures
● Some cooking and food preparation may be required
● Other responsibilities as they arise
Urban Farming: Greater Newark Conservancy manages the Hawthorne Avenue Farm (HAF), a 2.5-acre farm located in the South Ward of Newark. The HAF is home to over 70 production rows, more than 15 raised beds, an orchard, and a 200-bed community garden. Individuals in this position will be expected to work with our Farmer to maintain the site and assist with food production and harvesting. Applicants should also be willing to work with the Farmer and other staff to develop and execute programs that engage the community. Applicants for this position should be interested in urban agriculture and must feel comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions.
Responsibilities include:
● Completing ServSafe food handlers certification course
● Farm maintenance (planting, weeding, watering, lawn mowing)
● Harvesting and packaging produce
● Maintaining positive, friendly interactions with community gardeners
● Working outdoors in rain, shine, or cooler temperatures
● Other responsibilities as they arise
Horticulture: Greater Newark Conservancy maintains an Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) at its main office site. Individuals in this position will work with the Landscape Supervisor and Education staff to plan and maintain the various garden spaces in the OLC. Individuals will also learn to operate and maintain a newly installed food-producing hydroponic system. Applicants for this position should be interested in gardening and must feel comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions.
