Greater Newark Conservancy (the Conservancy) announces a $100,000 gift from Prudential Foundation Inc. (Prudential), the philanthropic arm of Prudential Financial. The funding will support the Conservancy’s food security programs, including the COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution effort, along with programs and activities at the Conservancy’s Hawthorne Avenue Farm.
This year, for Black History Month, we highlighted Black artists, environmentalists, food activists, and community-builders from Newark and around the world. By devoting a day to each honoree we hope to bring light to the amazing accomplishments of these pioneers. As members of the Newark community, we recognize the importance of giving recognition to important figures in the environmental sector who have shaped and are shaping a more just, verdant, and vibrant world. Although we are wrapping up this one month that is designated Black History Month, we know that Black history is American history and should be honored year-round.
Join us in celebrating these individuals. From everyone at Greater Newark Conservancy, Happy Black History Month!

On a gray and chilly late-January day at the Hawthorne Avenue Farm in Newark, New Jersey, there isn’t much greenery in sight. But in just a few months’ time, everything will look very different. Tomato and cucumber vines will stretch and curl around the hoop house frame. The trees will flower and then teem with peaches, pears, plums, apples, and two different types of cherries.
January is for new beginnings, and we’re happy to welcome these three outstanding community members to our Board of Trustees. We're energized to watch them propel the Conservancy to new heights!
As an environmental and educational nonprofit, we believe it’s important to involve youth in the development of their community. That’s why we partnered with Rutgers University – Newark through the Off-Campus Community Service Program (OCCSP) to provide two Federal Work Study (FWS) opportunities for college students. This program enables us to better serve the Newark community while preparing students for the future.
Every winter we host a holiday party for our board members and staff to mingle and share their favorite parts of the year. This year’s party was bittersweet as it marked Neal Zimmermann’s retirement from our board.
